NORTHERN MICHIGAN — From now through April, the Michigan State Police will be collecting purses and raising awareness of sexual assault survivors through its annual “Purses with a Purpose” fundraiser.
The fundraiser first began in 2019 and has since become an annual event. It is designed to coincide with Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.
The Michigan State Police Gaylord Post will be accepting new purses or tote bags filled with comfort items to benefit the Women’s Resource Center of Northern Michigan. The purses and their contents will be distributed to survivors of sexual assault.
"We have huge participation from the community," said Michigan State Police Lt. Derrick Carroll. "Last year, the Gaylord Post filled 192 purses."
Some examples of items to include are toiletries, hand sanitizer, socks, slippers, flip flops, blankets and comfort items for children.
